Spanish 21: An Alternative To Regular Blackjack

At many casinos around the world, you will find a game available as a variant of blackjack that offers players a number of different options that traditional blackjack does not have: Spanish 21.

Spanish 21 is a special version of blackjack and is an interesting variant upon the traditional blackjack game, as it offers a few twists that can make it both entertaining and highly profitable to a number of different players. One of the most notable differences in Spanish 21 over other standard card games, which is not necessarily so obvious up front, is that the decks that are used to play it contain no tens.

Prior to the game, all tens are removed from the decks; however, face cards are left in, in order to allow blackjacks to still be made. This means that there are a higher number of lower value cards throughout the decks, which means higher probability for the house to hit 21 and beat players – a very significant advantage in their favor.

To compensate for this, there is also a mini-game that can be played in addition to playing a standard hand each round. Like Three Card Poker, Spanish 21 allows for players to place a wager in a special circle, saying that they think they will have a certain card or pair of cards dealt. While in Three Card Poker, players bet to see if they can actually have a particular grouping, such as a pair, three of a kind, straight or flush, in Spanish 21, players bet to see if they will be dealt a card that will match the dealer's in either value or value and suit.

Many times, if players successfully match the dealer, they can have a payout of about five to one, while matching a suited card would pay out at nine to one. Further, this does not apply to just one card, as multiple decks are used in order to create the chute from which the cards are dealt. Therefore, a player can have two of the same card to match the dealer and thus twice the payout will be paid.

On top of that, if the dealer's card is a seven, and players are dealt sevens, this may have additional pay out in some places. Also, if a minimum wager of a value set by the house is placed on a table at any time and a player receives three sevens in a row to hit 21 points, a large jackpot is paid out to the player (in some cases as much as $5000 for a $10 bet.)

These differences between Spanish 21 and traditional blackjack create an interesting and exciting variant of blackjack that allows players an alternative to the traditional game, which can be both entertaining and enjoyable for long periods of time.

While it may not necessarily be offered at all casinos due to its various payouts available, (and its lack of high earnings for the house,) many different places around the world still offer this variant. If you are a blackjack enthusiast or simply looking for a different game to play, it is highly recommended that you try Spanish 21 today.

What Is Spanish 21?

Spanish 21 is a table game that has been growing in popularity over recent years and can now be found in most land-based and online casinos. It was introduced to Las Vegas casinos about 7 years ago and it is not uncommon to see 1-2 tables in almost every casino. It is rather new to online casinos, and it is not offered everywhere yet.

How Is Spanish 21 Played?

Spanish 21 is played with a 48 card deck. The 10s have been removed from the game, however, the casino has added some little bonuses for players to offset part of the added house advantage.

When playing Spanish 21, the rules are similar to Blackjack; however, the following enhanced rules apply:

  • Player's 21 always wins over the dealer's 21.
  • Player's Blackjack always wins over the dealer's Blackjack. (Pays out 3:2).
  • Outside of 21 and Blackjack, all other ties are pushed.
  • Player can double down on any number of cards, even after splits.
  • Player is allowed to split pairs, including aces, up to four hands.
  • After receiving the first two cards, the player is allowed to surrender, for which they would only lose half their bet. However, surrendering when the dealer has Blackjack is not permitted.
  • Dealer hits on a soft 17.
  • The player can perform a double down rescue; where you're able to surrender the original bet, and save the double down bet.

Special Spanish 21 Bonuses:

  • 5 card 21 pays 3:2
  • 6 card 21 pays 2:1
  • 7 card or more 21 pays 3:1
  • A 21 consisting of a 6,7, and 8 (mixed suits) pays 3:2
